Short Description: Martin Brothers (Martinware) salt glazed stoneware jug, 1898, renaissance style
Size: 24 cm tall
Condition: A very fine jug but it has had a hairline crack glued (not overpainted). See photos - the crack may be seen internally but it difficult to spot externally.
Marks/identifying features: Signed Martin Bros London & Southall and dated 3 -1898. Guaranteed genuine.
This large Martin Brothers jug is a typical and also very well made example of the brother's work during their productive middle years, beautifully potted and very well decorated. The shape has a post-medieval look and the swirling scrolls with pomegranates also recall the Renaissance. The handle has a particularly attractive terminal.
The jug has been cracked at some point. The crack has been glued very precisely. It extends to half way down the body. The repair can be seen internally as a faint hairline, but is very hard to see externally.
There is a light firing crack where the handle joins the body at the top - this is a manufacturing crack and typical of Martin Brothers.
A good chance to acquire a fine Martin Brothers piece at an affordable price which reflects the repaired crack.
