Size of each tile 6 inches (approx 15 cm) - frame 37 x 21 cm
The design of these beautiful tiles is usually attributed to Lewis F Day, a prominent designer of the late 19th century and a key figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. Day designed tiles for Pilkington, Craven Dunnill and Maw & Co, and the ruby lustre designs are invariably attributed to him.
The designs show large Poppy-like flowers in Clematis-like trailing branchs and leaves. The two tiles are different and fit together.
The techinque used for the lustre is a sophisticated one which was further developed by Day from the pioneering work done by William de Morgan. De Morgan revived the centuries old Islamic techniques of reduced lustre, often using Islamic designs to suit. The technique of these tiles is more advanced than that used by de Morgan, probably requiring several firings.
The condition of the tiles is excellent, with no edge chips or other damage. There is light crazing and a few very small scatches, as expected. The frame is made up from an oak frame of the same period as the tiles.
Each tile is marked on the back Maw & Co Ltd, England.
